Tamil Nadu Leads the Way in EV Charging Infrastructure – What’s Happening in Chennai?
Tamil Nadu is making headlines as the top state in India for public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. According to recent government data, it has 672 public EV charging stations , ahead of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Even more exciting is what’s happening in Chennai , where the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is taking steps to boost EV adoption across the city. They’ve announced plans to install 15 new EV charging stations in Chennai — one in each of the city’s 15 administrative zones .
These charging points will be set up at popular public places like parks, beaches, and government-owned properties, making it easier for people to charge their electric vehicles.
Top Locations for New EV Charging Stations in Chennai:

- Chennai Egmore National Art Gallery
- Magaral Park (Ambattur zone)
- Chetpet Eco Park and Bougainvilla Park (Anna Nagar zone)
- Semmozhi Park, Nageswara Rao Park,
- Marina Beach parking area (Teynampet zone)
- Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple parking lot,
- Thiruvanmiyur Beach parking, and
- Besant Nagar parking (Adyar zone)
This project is being developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) , with the goal of reducing “range anxiety” — the fear of running out of battery without a charging point nearby. The idea is to encourage more residents to make the switch to electric vehicles by making charging more convenient.
Affordable Charging Rates
The cost of charging your EV in these public stations will be regulated by the Tamil Nadu Energy Regulatory Commission (TNERC) . You can expect prices between ₹6.30 to ₹9.45 per unit , depending on the time of day(Peak Time or non-Peak Time).
